McCain and Lieberman On Tour

And the hits just keep coming:

When McCain made a foreign policy gaffe in Jordan on Tuesday, it was Sen. Joe Lieberman who quietly pointed out the mistake, giving McCain an opportunity to correct himself in front of the international press corps. In Israel yesterday, NBC’s Lauren Appelbaum reports, Lieberman once again intervened when McCain made an incorrect reference about the Jewish holiday Purim -- by calling the holiday "their version of Halloween here."

(h/t to Digby for the quote).

Yes, Purim, commemorating when Esther brought her petition before Ahasuerus and he granted it in the form of a treat of candy corn and Tootsie Rolls. (On the other hand, one time Holophernes refused Judith's request for Hershey's Dark Chocolate minis and got a nasty trick played on his ass in return.) Then, after thwarting the genocide Haman wanted to carry out against them, the victorious Jews sang "Bomb Bomb Persia" from the dais. And this is the story of the Jewish Halloween, called Purim.

It is much as the menorah is the set of special candles Jews use to celebrate Jewish Baby Jesus's Birthday, and how Passover is the Jewish Thanksgiving, which celebrates when Elijah brought gourds, corn, bitter herbs, and Manischewitz to the Israelites for the first time. In celebration, they made their kids dress up as Indians and Pilgrims, complete with construction paper headwear, every year after that.

(I'm sorry, but is he using rubber cement to stick his dentures up in his increasingly wacky head? It seems to me that some sort of fumes must be involved.)

Perhaps all of John McCain's holiday knowledge comes from Brady Bunch episodes and Peanuts specials. Or is that giving him too much credit? Or perhaps it comes from this film.
